Please remind your teenager to slow down and be careful while on campus.

New Book Purchase Procedure
In an effort to make the cost of books predictable for parents from year to year, and to simplify the inventory and billing process, we no longer will sell books individually to each student. Instead, we will issue a flat rate charge for the use of the books. This will include the textbooks and paperbacks. The following information details the changes:
- On registration day students will not need to pick up their books; instead, each teacher will hand out books in their classroom on the first day of school.
- At the end of the first semester, books from first semester classes will need to be returned. Charges will be assessed for unreturned books.
- At the end of the year, books for two semester classes, and books from second semester classes will need to be returned. Charges will be assessed for unreturned books.
- If another book is needed during the year as a replacement or as an extra copy, payment must be made by cash or check.
- If two sets of books are needed, a second flat rate fee will be charged for the second set.
- IMPORTANT and TIME SENSITIVE: Families that saved books for a younger sibling may return the books back to the bookstore for credit. The deadline for returns is the end of the school year. After June 6, 2008 , the bookstore will no longer buy books back from students or parents.
Please check with Shirley Keith, Bookstore Manager, at 630-562-7547 for the complete list of books that are returnable.

EKG Wrap-up
A big THANK YOU to the many people who made the first-ever EKG screening at WA a success!! Over 240 WA students received a free screening! The list of people to thank is long and includes the following:
- WA Booster Club for underwriting the expenses of this project by providing snacks and lunch for volunteers, covering rental costs for equipment and paying for miscellaneous supplies needed.
- Dr. James Lee for his tireless yearlong efforts to make these screenings happen
- WA staff who handled the numerous details of this project: Dawn Earl, Shari Gregersen, Jim Holtrop, and Beth Mitchell.
- WA parents Sherri McCoy and Tina Pell for organizing volunteers and Debbie Knighten for handling the food needs for the workers.
- WA teachers Corbett Burick, Steve Willemssen and Joel Visker who graciously vacated their classrooms for the screenings.
- And the 40-plus parents who worked as volunteers the day of the screening!!
If you didn’t join Boosters this year, we hope you’ll consider being a member for the 2008-09 school year!! The WA BC is doing some marvelous things for WA students, and we’d love your support!!
Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Each spring, WA moms roll out the red carpet and treat the faculty and staff to a luncheon fit for royalty! From the elegant table settings and decorations to the wonderful meal and service, this event is always a highlight for WA employees.
Heartfelt thanks go to this year’s coordinators Tere Long, Candy Daly and Sue Puccinelli for their labor of love and for sharing their gifts of creativity, hospitality, and organization. In addition, our deepest appreciation goes to the team of women who set the beautiful tables and served the faculty and staff.
Also, thank you to the many WA families who responded to the request for financial support of this event! Your generous contributions made the luncheon possible! Our thanks to all of you for making this event so special!

We are happy to announce that Jeff Brooke has been promoted to take over as the boys’ varsity soccer head coach. World Vision AIDS Experience Review
A huge thanks to so many of our WA parents who both visited and volunteered during the World Vision AIDS Experience on our campus. It was an incredible experience for our students and many, many others in the larger community. Over 2700 people visited the exhibit and over 240 children were sponsored in sub-Saharan Africa. World Vision was thrilled with their experience hosting the event here.
Here is an excerpt of an email from Jessica Ohlsen, World Vision Experience: AIDS East Coast Tour Manager
It has been one of the most exciting and fulfilling weeks I have experienced on this tour. I was constantly humbled and motivated by the students and their passion for Zambia and making a difference in the world. I don't think I have ever been around such amazing High School students. I was truly blessed by all of them. It is sad to leave, but it is wonderful to know that what we had here was not just something that your school was
participating in for a week, but a direction, passion and goal that is a part of your school's DNA. You guys lit the torch a long time ago, my team had the privilege to help spread the fire to a few more people, and long after we are gone you guys will still carry the torch!
Take the Expelled Challenge!
The contest is simple: get people to see the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed and collect the ticket stubs. Bring the ticket stubs to the front office by Monday, May 5th. The school with the most collected ticket stubs could win some money. Early reports

Here is one final reminder about the World Vision AIDS Experience Event we are hosting here at Wheaton Academy April 18-22. Our student body has responded in an amazing way and taken over 150 shifts thru the after school and weekend hours, but we are still in need of some significant volunteer help from our parent community to fill some of our open spots. Our need is still in the daytime hours and these spots allow our own students and students from other public and private schools to go thru the experience.
You can register online for any of the volunteer time slots below:
Fri 4/18 7:30-11:30am;
Mon 4/21 8am-12pm; 11am-3pm
Tues 4/22 9am-1pm; 12-4pm

We hope that you will have a chance to see the exhibit yourself over the next several days. You are encouraged to reserve your tickets for the time that you will be attending:
Fri 4/18 8:30 am-7:30 pm
Sat 4/19 8:00 am-9:00 pm
Sun 4/20 10 am-9 pm
Mon 4/21 9am-9 pm
Tues 4/22 10am-9 pm
Tuesday night from 6-9 pm is a special time we have designated for WA parents if they would like to come together, although you are welcome to attend any time.
Thanks for your prayers as we seek to pull off this event and give people a look into the lives of African kids and invite them to be part of God's Kingdom response. What a privilege it is to serve together with this amazing community of students in responding to God's call to our school and His church today.

The ceremony will wrap up in time for WA families to attend the 7 p.m. girls’ varsity soccer game or the 7 p.m. choral concert, so come early and join us for this historic moment in the life of our school! Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Would you like the opportunity to purchase a Prime Rib lunch for a Wheaton Academy teacher or hard-working staff member? Your opportunity is the 2008 Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, May 2.
Each spring, a committee of WA moms organizes and prepares a special luncheon for WA employees in appreciation of their labors and service throughout the year. These ladies roll out the red carpet for this event, setting beautiful tables with their own china and crystal, preparing a deliciously gourmet meal, and serving the attendees with care and grace. The WA faculty and staff have come to anticipate this luncheon as one of the highlights of the year.
The chairs of this committee have it worked out so that they can serve an incredible Prime Rib lunch to each WA employee for only $10 a person! Your participation can be as simple as a $10.00 monetary contribution. In the past, some families have even asked to purchase lunch for more than one employee. These additional donations are also very much appreciated!
Checks can be made out to Wheaton Academy and mailed to Sue Puccinelli, 690 Rosewood Drive West Chicago, IL 60185.
Questions? Contact Sue at 630-562-1560 or suepuccinelli@sbcglobal.net.

You, your family and friends are invited to join us for an evening of celebration. We will recognize the demonstration of the God-given talents in the lives of your sons and daughters for the 2007-2008 school year. More information will be coming soon.
A Message from Dan Crabtree, College Counselor
This is the time of year when students receive solicitations ("invitations") to join certain organizations -- many of which charge a fee. Two of the most prominent are Who's Who and The National Society of High School Scholars. They are not scams, but the benefits of membership are negligible. It does not improve a student's chances of being admitted
to college. Do not confuse the NSHSS with the National Honor Society.
Meal Ticket Payment Change
As of April 18, you may no longer charge meal tickets to your student’s account. You must now purchase your meal tickets from Mrs. Fernandes at the front office.
Winterim Trip to Italy and Greece
Wheaton Academy will be leading a Winterim trip to Italy and Greece in January 2009. This tour will explore the rich literary, historical, cultural, and biblical sites in and around Florence, Rome, and Athens. Ms. Daniels and Mrs. VanZee will lead the trip. The cost of this 10-day trip is approximately $3000, which includes a visit to the Italian Renaissance art in Florence, the Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and much more. Our itinerary will include places connected to the Apostle Paul’s visits in Rome and Corinth.
Further, students will have the opportunity to serve and minister to other Italian students during one day of the trip. The trip is open to next school year’s sophomores, juniors, and seniors. A student informational meeting will be held during lunch on Wednesday, April 30 in Ms. Daniels’s room (208). A parent informational meeting will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 7:00 PM in the library.

After 29 years of service at Wheaton Academy spanning the last 36 years, Susan Butcher will retire this June. One of Susan’s desires is to collect the photos of her taken by students over the years as a part of the CTC project. It seems that Susan enjoyed making these photos fun and memorable! If your student(s) still has a Mrs. Butcher photo, please send it to Barb Frost at WA or e-mail it to her at bfrost@wheatonacademy.org.
Also, Bunny Fisher has just announced her retirement after 24 years of service here at Wheaton Academy. Please join us on Sunday, May 18, from 2:00-4:00 pm for a joint open house in the Wheaton Academy Atrium to celebrate Susan’s and Bunny’s retirements.
Then, on Monday, May 19, WA Salutes Dr. Roth! Plan to join us at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. This will be a meaningful evening of fellowship and celebration as we honor Dr. David Roth for his 19 years of service to Wheaton Academy. In an effort to capture 19 years of Wheaton Academy memories for Dr. Roth, we invite your contribution to a special memory book we're putting together for Dr. Roth. Your letter or card (including photos if possible and no larger than 8.5 x 11) can be mailed to: WA Salutes Dr. Roth, Wheaton Academy, 900 Prince Crossing Road, West Chicago IL 60185 - or emailed to WASalutesDrRoth@wheatonacademy.org.

The next Saturday Parent Seminar, “Millennial Generation,” will be on April 26 from 8:30 – 10:00 am. This seminar, led by Chip Huber, will provide a fun, creative and enlightening look at this current generation of teenagers. This research-based presentation examines the demographics, needs, behaviors, characteristics, and faith of the current generation of high school and college students. It offers plenty of statistics to consider and thoughts on how to better care for, connect with, educate, disciple, and parent the "millennial" generation.
Join us for this informative seminar. RSVP via email to Anne Case acase@wheatonacdemy.org by April 23rd.

Ballet Magnificat!
Please join us on Friday, April 18, 7:30pm for the Ballet Magnificat! performance of The Hiding Place. Ballet Magnificat! is an arts organization dedicated to presenting the good news of Jesus Christ to the whole world. Check their website for a sneak preview at www.balletmagnificat.com/A_promo.html and click on The Hiding Place promo video.
Inspired by the true story of Corrie ten Boom, Hiding Place is a portrayal of divinely inspired forgiveness and hope found in Jesus Christ in the midst of desperate and unimaginable suffering. Ballet Magnificat! Omega taps into the struggle of two women (Corrie and her sister, Betsie) in the Harlem ghetto in 1944 as they help their life-long Jewish neighbors and friends find security in a small hiding place built in the wall of their home, only to be discovered and transported to the concentration camp of Ravensbrück. Amidst the painful conditions of prison life, they turn to the only unshakable – Jesus Christ, the true Hiding Place.
Tickets for this moving performance are only $15 and are available online or by calling the Wheaton Academy Artist Series Hotline at 630-562-7588.

If you know of current 8th graders considering Wheaton Academy, please encourage them to complete all the pieces of their application by April 15th. During the month of April, we are also accepting application materials for students who seek to transfer to Wheaton Academy next year.
Paper Recycling at WA

We will be collecting and recycling paper school-wide, but we also encourage you to bring paper, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and paperback books to recycle as well. Place these things in the green and yellow receptacle by the maintenance shed.
Please note that the following are NOT acceptable: card board, plastic, foam board, glass, aluminum, phone books, or anything from the bathroom or kitchen (cereal boxes, milk cartons, soda cartons, or food cartons).
Thank you in advance for your participation!

Jostens will be sending out invoices this week if you still owe a balance. If you have not made other payment arrangements directly with Jostens, please send in the payment (made out to Jostens) with your student on March 18 so that he/she can bring home your order. Caps and Gowns are distributed in May. Any questions about your order should be directed to Jostens at 630-653-3794. Thank you.

Graduation Ticket Information
Parents of Seniors: We are beginning to receive questions about tickets for Graduation, which is May 31, 2008 at 10:00am. Specific ticket information is not available yet, but click here to find out what the procedure has been in years past.
A note from Mrs. Kori Hockett, Assistant Principal
Parents, please be reminded that our School Nurse is available from 9:30am - 2:30pm, Monday - Friday.
Therefore, if your child needs medication or medical assistance before 9:30am we advise you to take the necessary steps at home, before your student leaves for school. Also keep in mind that if your child is too ill to attend their 1st or 2nd period classes, they should remain at home since there will not be a nurse at school to assist them and we don't have the facilities for them to rest until they are well enough to return to classes.
Be aware that students who are too sick to return to class after 30 minutes with our nurse at any time during the day will need to make arrangements to go home in order to get better. Thank you.
Summer Athletic Camps
Summer Athletic Camp registration has begun! All WA families received a copy in the registration packets that were mailed last week. If you misplaced yours, download the brochure and registration sheet. We also have brochures available in reception area.

Representatives from Cedarville University (3/12) and West Point (3/13) will visit WA during lunch this coming week to talk with interested students.
World Vision AIDS Experience
On April 18-22, Wheaton Academy will be hosting a major event for our school community and the larger local church and educational community in our Commons. The World Vision AIDS Experience allows you to come and walk in the steps of a child affected by the AIDS crisis. This experience is an interactive exhibit that combines stirring audio and captivating photography, transporting you into the heart of Africa. You'll see, hear, and experience stories of tragedy and triumph lived out by real children in AIDS-afflicted communities. And you will gain a completely new perspective on the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time.
You will receive an invitation to both attend and volunteer at this event in the coming weeks. We are excited to provide this opportunity as part of our Zambia Project initiative and to be a resource for educating others about this need that our student community has become deeply passionate about. For more information and a preview of what will be coming to Wheaton Academy, please visit the event's website.
A Reminder to Parents of Freshmen from the English Department
All freshmen will have the privilege of attending a performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier Tuesday, March 11th. We must leave for Chicago on the busses by 8:00, so please make sure that your son or daughter is on campus in the Fine Arts Center no later than 7:40 a.m. We are asking the students to dress up a bit – we are going to the theater, after all! We will eat lunch at the Food Court on Navy Pier following the performance. Students may either bring a bag lunch or bring $6-8 to purchase lunch. Most students have turned in their permission slips and money. Please confirm with your son or daughter that he or she has done so.
The Chicago Shakespeare Theater Acting Company is recognized as one of the world’s best Shakespeare companies. We believe that your sons and daughters will have a wonderful learning experience on this field trip.
Boys’ Tennis Tryouts
Boys’ tennis will be holding tryouts on March 11th, starting at 3:25pm. (Due to weather constraints, tryouts may be delayed. Please listen for more information). To learn more about tryouts or about the upcoming season, please contact Matt Hockett at mhockett@wheatonacademy.org.
Student Reps
Any current freshmen, sophomore, or junior interested in serving as a student representative for next year should pick up an application from the front office and return it by March 14.
Food, Video & Movie Night
Spanish Club will hang out on March 14 in Room 107 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Bring a dish to share.
Reminder from Athletics

Free Baby Grand Piano
The Buricks have a baby grand piano that they are giving away. It is in need of considerable maintenance, but seems to be working fine. The only "cost" would be that the piano would have to be removed by the interested party from the house. Feel free to contact Josh Burick at jburick@wheatonacademy.org or 630-562-7518, or Corbett Burick at cburick@wheatonacademy.org or 630-562-7541.
